How to Plan for a Bathroom Remodel with 7 Questions

The key to any successful remodeling project is planning. Here are seven questions to ask yourself to help plan your bathroom remodel.

1. What Do I Want In the Bathroom From a Function Perspective?

Think about what you want from your new bathroom. More counter space? Can you sacrifice a tub if you have a good shower? Do you need more cupboard space?

2. How Do I Want It to Look?

The look of your bathroom will depend on how you want to feel in the new bathroom. Do you want a relaxing space or just the bare essentials for quick use? How you want to feel will also help in deciding between a modern or traditional bathroom.

Moodboards of styles, materials, and colors can help give you a starting point and help bring those ideas to life (hello Pinterest!). Once you have picked out a few favorites, show them to your designer or project manager so they can understand your goal.

Remember that you don’t have to follow what everyone else is doing. This is your bathroom and one you’ll use and be in every day, so make it how you’ll like it! At REvised, we can help complete your bathroom remodel by choosing wall and floor coverings, colors, faucet shapes, bath sizes, and finishes.

3. Can I Change the Layout, or Would It Be Too Costly to Alter the Plumbing?

As experienced real estate and renovation professionals, we can help answer this question. We’ve seen and been a part of many projects that change their plumbing, and we can tell you if it’s possible or not.

How much you can change your layout will depend on the type of property you live in, how it’s constructed, where the existing soil pipes are, and whether it’s economical and practical to move them. This is when you’ll want an open mind so you can experiment with moving features and if it would improve the flow and functionality of your bathroom. As your designer, we can provide you with multiple layouts! We can find space by taking advantage of boxed-in walls or borrowing space from adjacent unused areas to increase options.

4. What Kind of Lighting Is Best in a Bathroom?

Bathroom lights can be tricky and complex. But with us on your team, it doesn’t have to be! You’ll want lights that can be water-resistant and sealed, so it’s not affected by steam and moisture. You might want to have different lights for different moods. This is when having more than one lighting circuit can come in handy.

5. What About Storage?

Think about how you use storage now. Is it used for towels or just toiletries? Your answer will change what kind of storage you’ll need in your bathroom. For a more luxurious option, you’ll want to make the most of the space. Cleaning products, toilet rolls, and toiletries are mostly found under the basin, next to, or above the toilet. Freestanding and off-the-shelf cabinets can be an inexpensive solution too.

6. How Long Will The Bathroom Remodel Take?

Most renovations require a minimum of a couple of weeks. Even if it’s a small space, many people are involved in a bathroom remodel, like plumbers, electricians, tilers, and decorators. Always assume that the builder will need to turn off the water and power at some point, so be prepared for that temporary sacrifice.

7. How Much Will The Bathroom Remodel Cost?

The cost of your bathroom remodel will depend on the materials and size of the space. But to get an estimate, create a spreadsheet so you can list everything you’ll need and might need. Don’t forget about including the builder’s cost for any reconfiguring, electrical, plumbing, tiling, decorating, and the cost of fixtures. It’s easy to forget accessories, too, so include those as well!
